Japan starts hunting whales for research purposes again
publiziert: Freitag, 17. Nov 2000 / 13:30 Uhr
Tokyo - Despite sharp international criticism Japan renewed the hunting of whales, ostensibly for "research purposes", with the departure of whaling fleet for the Antarctic on Friday.
The Japanese Fisheries Ministry said on Friday that 400 minke whales would be hunted for research purposes. It said that data about the age of the whales as well as their breeding and feeding habits would be collected.
The fleet consists of three whalers, a spotter ship and the research ship Nisshin Maru. The fleet would return to Japan in April 2001. The fleet departed from the port of Shimonoseki, where the next International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting is to be held in 2002.
The environmental organisation Greenpeace protested against the resumption of the whaling saying that Japan was ignoring international treaties and called on Tokyo to recall the vessels.
In Germany, Joerg Feddern, a Greenpeace spokesman said, "Japan is coldly ignoring international criticism and is carrying on with killing protected whales. This must finally come to an end."
Despite a worldwide moratorium on whale hunting Japan hunts numerous whales for so-called research purposes. Whale meat is a delicacy in Japan and it finds its way into Japanese restaurants. Officially the meat is sold to offset the costs of the research.
According to Greenpeace Japan plans in the long term to engage in whaling and to make profits from the meat it sells. A kilogramme of whale meat can bring in as much as 260 dollars. The government says that selling off whale meat after research has been conducted does not violate any laws.
Various environmental organisations have criticised Japan's whaling in the north Pacific and in the Antarctic. Earlier this year, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society - an organisation focused on the conservation of marine mammals - said that to date no scientific data which has been made public internationally by the Japanese.
Since the IWC voted for an international moratorium on commercial whaling in 1982, Japan has killed more than 7,000 whales in Antarctica and the Northern Pacific. It has done so under the guise of science.
Japan and Norway are the only two countries that still hunt whales and have been criticised not only by environmental groups, such as GreenPeace, but also by various governments, such as the United States, Australia and Britain.
